This atmospheric residence occupies a privileged spot in the traditional hilltop village of Emporeios. In just two minutes, guests can reach the highest point for a sweeping view of the island’s still active – but not erupting – volcano. Protected as a site of special architectural value, Emporeios extends around the ruins of a Venetian fortress, inside which stands a 13th century church. The elevated position in the stone-built settlement affords breathtaking views of the sea and surrounding countryside, while its convenient location makes it is an ideal base for exploring the rest of the island. Cool in summer and cosy in winter, the residence offers a truly unique living experience all year round.
Description
Caldera II is the upstairs part of the two-storey residence and can be rented either separately or together with the lower level (Caldera I). Both levels have private entrances and courtyards with magnificent sea views. Built around 1850, the residence was completely restored in 2015 with respect for local architectural traditions, using only eco-friendly primary materials, especially the local volcanic rock that gives the house not only its special character but also its affectionate descriptive name, Melanopetra (“black stone”). The uncluttered interior spaces are characterized by minimalist white interiors.
The upper level, covering 45 m2, has independent access from the street via a secluded courtyard. It features a comfortable sitting area with a built-in corner sofa that can be used to host an extra guest, as well as a fireplace and low windows that afford a tantalizing view of the Aegean. The separate sleeping area with double mattress occupies an enchanting wooden loft, from where guests can enjoy a magnificent sea view through a small window almost at floor level.
The fully equipped kitchen with small dining table looks out onto the yard and the surrounding nature. Between the kitchen and the loft there are a number of storage spaces. The bathroom, with its polished cement shower unit and travertine sinks, is gently illuminated by a skylight.
The lovely yard with built-in seating and soft cushions provides the perfect spot for relaxing with a book or enjoying a drink in total privacy under the shade of a beige canopy, while taking in the captivating views of the sea and village.
